The Northern Cape Department of Health warns the public about heat stroke.
Heat stroke is a condition presenting as fever and often unconsciousness, caused by failure of body's temperature-regulating mechanism when exposed to excessive high temperatures.
Signs & symptoms of heat exhaustion maybe nausea, vomiting, fatigue, weakness, headache headaches, muscle cramps & aches as well as dizziness.
Though, some individuals can develop symptoms of heat stroke suddenly & rapidly without warning.
Different people may present different signs & symptoms of heat stroke like high body temperature, absence of sweating with hot red or flushed dry skin, rapid pulse, difficult breathing, strange behaviour, hallucinations, confusion, agitation, disorientation, seizure and or coma.
Heat stroke can be prevented by doing the following:
Avoid dehydration & vigorous activities in hot & humid weather.
Drink plenty of water & sports drinks, but avoid alcohol & caffeine including soft drinks & tea (as they cause dehydration) if you have to perform physical activities in hot weather.
Take frequent breaks to hydrate wearing hats & light coloured lightweight loose clothes.
Keep cars locked when not in use and never ever leave infants, children or pets unattended in locked cars.
