NORTHERN CAPE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH HOSTED A SUCCESSFUL MOVE FOR HEALTH CAMPAIGN IN TSINENG, JOE MOROLONG LOCAL MUNICIPALITY.
As part of our continued efforts to promote physical activity, nutrition and healthy lifestyle, the Northern Cape Health MEC, Maruping Lekwene celebrated the move for health campaign in Tsineng, Joe Morolong local Municipality.
The event was graced by Councillors representing the Joe Morolong local municipality, the tribal council member of Kgosi Shuping, senior management in the Department and community members.
The Department organised a programme full of physical activity, because the main focus is to stress the importance of an active lifestyle. It is also to help members of the communities to take the first step towards maintaining healthy lifestyle.
The core message is that physical activity, healthy diet, tobacco and alcohol free lifestyle are effective for individuals and in principle, an easy and cheap way to prevent disease and improve health. It is cost effective and affordable public health tool with great potential.
The world health organisation lists physical inactivity among the risks contributing to global chronic disease morbidity and mortality, especially unhealthy diet and tobacco use.
Non-communicable diseases better known as diseases of lifestyle have reached alarming proportions in our country and also right here in the Northern Cape.
“Your contribution today in the aerobics session is indicative of the fact that our country is steadily progressing towards building a stronger and healthy nation, the partnership between government and the people can only find expression when our people take initiative and their destiny in their own hands.” - MEC Lekwene said MEC Lekwene further urged community members to engage in activities that exercise the body daily so that they remain healthy and stop diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and hypertension that creeps into our lives as we grow older.
Exercise builds stronger bones, brings down blood pressure, lower cholesterol, burns off excess weight, boosts immunity, reduces cancer risk, increases self-esteem, improves mental sharpness, lessens depression and anxiety, and eases stress levels.
Lastly, the MEC also empathized the importance of eating healthy necessary to supply the nutrients our body requires. He further encouraged everyone to also drink lots of water, because water helps with digestion and absorption of foods and with the removal of waste products.
