More than half a million registered voters in the Northern Cape had the opportunity on Wednesday, 18 May 2011, to elect their municipal councillors in South Africa's fourth democratic municipal elections. 10 political parties consisting of 1573 candidates plus 27 independent candidates were voted for at the 655 voting stations across the province.
